Why getting below the surface matters
As a fish returns to depth, increasing water pressure rapidly recompresses the gases that expanded during the trip to the surface.
10 metres → about ½ the surface gas volume
20 metres → about ⅓
30 metres → about ¼

What about depredation?
Predators taking hooked or released fish is a major concern for offshore fishermen. Sharks and marine mammals can both be involved.
Research led by fisheries scientist Dr Marcus Drymon followed 988 filmed fish descents and found observed depredation during descent was far less than 1%.
